Niche Investing
We invest venture capital in companies that dominate a niche market. A niche market is a sector of our economy, perhaps only $500 million to $1 billion in size.
The number of potential competitors should be limited. The total amount of capital needed to become a leading company should be small, generally under $30 million.
Companies can sell products or services, but they must have a proprietary position.
We finance buy-outs of smaller companies where the purchase price is under $50 million.
We must be doing something right: in 2008 there were only 8 IPOs
of venture backed companies. One was one of ours. In 2009 there
were only 12 IPOs: one was one of ours.
